The main cause of age-related B12 deficiency is a decrease in the production of gastric acid. Normally, vitamin B12 enters the body along with animal proteins - meat, eggs, and dairy products. In order to release B12 from food, hydrochloric acid is needed, which is produced in smaller quantities with age. As a result, even with sufficient consumption of foods rich in this vitamin, the body may not receive it in full.

Another problem is atrophic gastritis - a condition that is often found among older people and in which the gastric mucosa thins. This further reduces the production of both hydrochloric acid and intrinsic factor of Castle, a protein without which the absorption of B12 in the intestine is practically impossible. According to experts, up to 30% of people over 50 years old may have a reduced ability to absorb this vitamin.

In the case of a confirmed lack of the vitamin, the doctor may prescribe special supplements or injections that help quickly restore the level of B12 in the body.

Prevention can include the use of vitamin complexes for the elderly, as well as fortified foods - for example, breakfast cereals, soy milk or nutritional yeast, which contain a synthetic form of B12, which is more easily absorbed by the body without the participation of stomach acid. Understanding this problem and timely intervention help maintain a decent quality of life even in old age.
