What to do if water gets in your ear: useful tips and actions

Many of us have encountered a situation where water gets into our ear, especially while swimming, swimming in a pool or taking a shower. Although this usually does not lead to serious problems, the unpleasant feeling can remain for a long time. In this article, we will look at what to do if water gets into your ear and how to avoid possible complications.

The first thing you need to know is that water that gets into your ear is usually not dangerous. It can get into the external ear canal, which often happens when swimming or diving. However, if the water is retained, it can create a favorable environment for the development of bacteria or fungi, which in turn leads to infections such as "swimmer's ear". Therefore, it is important to act correctly.

First of all, do not panic and do not try to clean your ear with foreign objects such as cotton swabs. This can only make things worse, damaging the skin of the ear canal and causing inflammation. The best solution is to try to drain the water naturally. To do this, tilt your head to the side so that the ear with the water is facing down. You can gently tap the ear with your finger or try jumping on one leg to help the water drain.

If the water does not come out, you can use other methods. For example, try using hot air from a hair dryer. With the hair dryer on a low setting, carefully hold it about 30 cm from the ear. This will help evaporate the water. It is important not to place the hair dryer too close to avoid burning the skin or damaging the hearing aid.

Another effective method is to use special ear drops, which can be purchased at a pharmacy. These drops help dissolve water that has entered the ear, and they also have antiseptic properties that can prevent infections. It is important to follow the instructions for using such products.

If none of the methods have helped, or you experience pain, itching, or other unpleasant symptoms, you should consult a doctor. This may indicate the development of an infection or damage to the ear. The doctor can conduct an examination and prescribe appropriate treatment.

So, although water in the ear is a common occurrence, it is important to react to it correctly to avoid complications. It is important to remember that preventing such situations, such as using special earplugs when swimming or carefully cleaning the ears after water procedures, is also an important part of preventing infections and discomfort.
