Treatment of urinary incontinence in women: Basic aspects

Urinary incontinence is a common problem among women, which can significantly affect the quality of life. According to statistics, about 30% of women over the age of 50 face this disease. It can occur for a variety of reasons, including pregnancy, childbirth, menopause, and age-related changes.

Among the most common forms of urinary incontinence are stress, imperative and mixed. Stress incontinence occurs during physical exertion, coughing or sneezing. Urge incontinence is characterized by a sudden and overwhelming urge to urinate that cannot always be controlled. Mixed incontinence combines features of both forms.

Treatment of urinary incontinence includes several approaches. First of all, it is important to consult a doctor to determine the exact causes of the disease. In many cases, conservative methods such as physical therapy and pelvic floor strengthening exercises can be effective. For example, the Kegel method helps to strengthen the muscles that support the bladder.

In cases where conservative methods do not bring the desired results, medication may be recommended. Medicines that strengthen the bladder muscles or regulate its activity can help reduce symptoms. The choice of drug depends on the specific case and should be carried out by a doctor.

Surgery may also be a treatment option for women with severe incontinence. Operations can range from simple procedures to more complex ones. The success of surgical treatment depends on many factors, including the general health of the patient and the nature of the incontinence.

No less important is the psychological aspect of treatment. Women who experience incontinence often experience shame and discomfort, which can lead to isolation. Support from family, friends, and healthcare professionals is critical to improving patients' emotional state and overall well-being.
